Objective:
With a randomly assigned word, create a poster that conveys the different and multiple meanings of given word.
Project Description:
The word is “state” and the controlling idea is “The state of the oceans affects our state, mentally and geographically.”
The white border was added to make the poster seem like an official poster. The word “State” is in Neutraface to differentiate it from the blackletter and body copy. Neutraface was chosen as its uppercase A came to a sharper point and has a geometric look relates it to buildings. The status indicator is also in Neutraface to relate it back to the content.
The “We the People,” “live in,” and geographical and mental states are in Carol Gothic. The black letter creates a connection to the Constitution. Certain phrases in the body copy are also in blackletter to connect it to the unfinished phrase, “live in____.” The body copy is Caslon, as the serif alludes to official documents and the Constitution. Caslon had the best readability at the small size.
Project Analysis:
The state of the oceans affects our state, mentally and geographically. The first things someone should notice are the plastic bag or the word, “state.” The blue should give feeling of being in the ocean, making the plastic bag seem like a jellyfish. The word “state” should call official government buildings to mind. After this, the viewer should be drawn to “We the People.”
Due to the blackletter and the phrase, it should call the Constitution to mind, This is further enforced by the columns of text. The viewer should read the “live in, skimming through, assuming they are US states, but should soon be met with mental states.
These are statements, thus typing further into the word, “state.” From here, the body copy is read top to bottom—the discuss climate change, anxiety, and depression. The status indicator in the bottom right that indicates the state of the oceans is noticed last.
